  • In 1922, after the death of Olof August Danielsson, the squeezes of Etruscan inscriptions and other documentation that had been collected for the Corpus Inscriptionum Etruscarum (CIE) by Karl Pauli and his followers from 1885 onwards, was bequeathed to the Unviersity Library at Uppsala. When the CIE project was revived after the Second World War, the collections of Danielsson were considered lost, and the fascicle of inscriptions from Southern Etruria (CIE II, I, 4), published in 1970, was based entirely on studies made after the War. The present volume contains material preserved in Danielsson's collections on 211 of the altogether 717 numbers in the CIE II, I, 4, together with 15 previously unknown or forgotten inscriptions. In a great part of the cases, this material provides importan contributions to the reading, including some completely new ones to replace incorrect nineteenth-century versions. For the rest, the Danielsson collection provides minor corrections or confirm existin conjectures and emendations. Moreover, there is frequent information on the whereabouts of individual inscriptions at precise points of time. Beside the epigraphical material, the book aims at illuminating the practical work of the CIE pioneers. Ouotations from letters and journals give a picture of the difficulties encountered by Danielsson and his colleagues - mostly of a practical nature, but also of the scholarly disputes that in various ways influenced their work.
