Down to quite recent times the book was almost universally attributed to St. John of Damascus. - pref.
"Life of St. John of Damascene": p. xvii-xx.
The Greek version of the Barlaam and Joasaph legend, one generally thought to be the work of St. John of Damascus, is now recognized to be a highly embroidered translation of an earlier (possibly Georgian) text, done perhaps by St. John of Damascus or by St. Euthymius, abbot of Iviron.
