- The central region of the Middle East surrounded by the richest sites of antiquity Egypt to the West, Mesopotamia to the north, India to the East, and various sea routes to the south Arabia has been a crossroads for many millennia: hence the theme of this Hermitage exhibition catalogue, the road both for traders and pilgrims. Works from various museums in the Saudi Arabia and articles by Saudi and Russian scholars unfold the art and history from the paleolithic period through the Islamic period to the founding of the modern state. Chapter headings are roughly chronological: prehistoric Arabia, sixth to the second millenium B.C.; the oasis of Hajaz in northwestern Arabia in the second half of the first millennium B.C.; trade cities of central Arabia; northeastern Arabia in the Hellenistic period; the holy cities of Islam.
