The Royal Numismatic Society held a conference at the Society of Antiquaries in London on 14-16th September 2000 entitled ‘Counterfeiting: Ancient and Modern’. It was the intention to publish the contributors’ papers as the fifth monograph on metallurgy in numismatics within the Special Publications series. For various reasons the publishing project was beset by delays, and, given the timescale, several of the papers were either withdrawn or not considered suitable for publication. Eventually eight papers remained, but their combined length was insufficient to justify publication in monograph form. It was therefore decided that MIN 5 should be published as a separate enclave within Numismatic Chronicle 2012.
