Beschreibung: The history of Athens during the Ottoman period is of central importance for the Gennadius Library. The founder of the Library, Joannes Gennadius, was interested in an expansive vision of Hellenism through the ages. His collections are particularly singinficant in holdings of the Ottoman period, and he was especially drawn to materials on Athens, for he was a descendant of the prominent Athenian Benizelos family. Not only is the family's mansion the sole survinving residence of the Ottoman period, as the essay of Yannis Kizis demonstrates, but the Gennadius Library owns two works in manuscript form authored by Joannes Gennadius's ancestor Ioannis Benizelos (1730-1807). The similar interests of the Aikaterini Laskaridis Foundation have secured the publication of this volume, a joint effort of two institutions that respect the exploration of history.
