Analysis of the gender system as a determining factor in social relations has made it possible to rethink the construction of hierarchical relationships, social roles and the formation of stereotypes, and to restore the role of women in the political, social, religious and cultural history of Greek cities. As a result, the history of the family has also moved out of the purely private sphere and is no longer based on binary oppositions that attribute fixed characteristics to each gender. Changes in the private relationships between spouses can be interpreted as adaptations to the political and social conditions of the time, which in turn helped to modify them. The book sheds light on several aspects of these transformations in the Hellenistic period: in the administration of the family patrimony, where women played a more visible role; in the public arena, where honorary monuments and foundations multiplied, making families visible; and in the strategies of legitimisation and self-representation of the new dynasties, in which queens played a central role. The new visibility acquired by women in these contexts sheds light on the new balances resulting from the greater integration of families into public life, and sheds light on a whole area of the social history of the Hellenistic period.
