- Among the many results of the excavations at the Gabbari Bridge site in Alexandria, directed by the CEAlex, the discovery of ossuary vases containing burnt human bones is of considerable importance. In this enormous necropolis, made up of several thousand bodies deposited in hypogeum loculi or buried in the ground, they served as a reminder that the practice of cremation, albeit in a minority, was a means of dealing with the dead during the Greco-Roman period. Mainly preserved in museums, these vases of various types, sometimes intended solely for funerary purposes, sometimes reused after their primary domestic function, have long been considered as excellent examples for epigraphic and stylistic study. This volume shows how they can be excavated and become objects of study in their own right. Using a multi-disciplinary approach, they provide an insight into ancient funerary practices and reveal the nature of the pyres, none of which have yet been found in Alexandria.
