En accueillant les Goths, chassés par les Huns, dans l'Empire (en Thrace et en Mésie), à partir de 376, l'empereur Flavius Valens ne se doute pas qu'en août 378, à Andrinople (Adrianople, Editne, en Turquie), son armée sera confrontée à leur fureur au cours d'ine mémorable.
